The History of the Matakawau War Memorial Hall
The hall was first opened on the 21st Oct 1950 by the Hon Mr W. Bodkin, The minister of the internal affairs Mr. R .J. Hunter donated half an acre of land for the hall to be built on The hall was built by locally milled timber and voluntary labour with free cartage All from this local district.
Total project cost approx. 3000.00 pounds Chairman; Mr Mat. Hatton, Secretary Mr. Lindsay Sergeant April the 28th 1955 the hall was invested in the council and received a war memorial subsidy of 1473 pounds In 1981 the new supper room , kitchen and toilets were built with the finance from public donations and voluntary labour cost approx. $35000 chair Mr Kieth Hamilton secretary Mr Peter Clark
In 1991 -2 the main hall was rebuilt major construction by contractors, finishings by voluntary labour , total cost $139,788. The hall was reopened 13th June 1992 by MR Max Short Mayor of the Franklin district council Chairman ; Mr Malcolm Millar Secretary Treasurer ; Mrs Barbara sergeant Project manager; Mr Peter Sergeant
